The simplest way to think of employee engagement is when your staff feels psychologically and emotionally “checked-in” to their job. Employees are always assessing their company’s image and what it means to work there. Are people treated fairly? Does the senior staff know what they’re doing? Is there justice whenever there is wrongdoing? These are just some of the things that contribute to company engagement.
Engagement with my boss
For most employees, they have to report to a direct supervisor on a daily basis. This relationship can often have the most serious impact on how engaged they are. Is my boss fair to me? Does my boss appear to care about my needs? Is there preferential treatment, or is everyone treated the same? Is there any discrimination or prejudice going on? If an employee feels uneasy about any of these issues, you can bet they are disengaged.
This is a bit more straightforward, but companies miss this all the time. Employees want to know exactly how their job description and role fit into the big picture.
