Taking the Mystery out of Employee Engagement

What does it mean when an employee is engaged? The question of employee engagement can often be difficult for companies, because it is hard to measure.  Each year companies put out surveys, sit down with their staff, and want to know how much they “care” about the company and the work they do.

The simplest way to think of employee engagement is when your staff feels psychologically and emotionally “checked-in” to their job.  But when you break down exactly how this happens (and how it can be maintained), things get a little tricky.  Although all of our employee engagement work is carefully measured and tracked through cutting-edge software.

Types of Employee Engagement

Engagement with the company

Employees are always assessing their company’s image and what it means to work there.  Are people treated fairly? Does the senior staff know what they’re doing? Is there justice whenever there is wrongdoing? These are just some of the things that contribute to company engagement.

Engagement with my boss

For most employees, they have to report to a direct supervisor on a daily basis.  This relationship can often have the most serious impact on how engaged they are.  Is my boss fair to me?  Does my boss appear to care about my needs?  Is there preferential treatment, or is everyone treated the same?  Is there any discrimination or prejudice going on?  If an employee feels uneasy about any of these issues, you can bet they are disengaged.

Strategic engagement

This is a bit more straightforward, but companies miss this all the time.  Employees want to know exactly how their job description and role fit into the big picture.  No matter how big or small their task, every employee wants to feel like they’re contributing.  Are you doing your part to make sure they know where they fit into the corporate strategy?
